Workshops and Thesis Support Programs

The Graduate Writing Center offers a variety of writing workshops throughout the year. During the summer, we offer various dissertation "boot camps" for graduate students working on dissertation proposals and dissertations. We also periodically offer writing groups and online writing retreats. For master's thesis and capstone writers, we offer a master's thesis and capstone mentoring program. Writing Consultation Appointments

The GWC offers free writing appointments with friendly, experienced writing consultants to all registered UCLA graduate and professional school students. Writing consultants are happy to work on issues ranging from organization and argumentation to grammatical issues in a collaborative, interactive manner (not as copy-editors or proofreaders). Our goal is to help you become an effective writer in your field.

How Do I Schedule an Appointment?

Appointments are limited to one appointment per day, available on a first-come, first-served basis, and two future appointments scheduled in the 12twenty appointment system at any given time. Please consult our GWC policies page for more information concerning our policies.

For setting up your 12twenty account or any technical issues related to 12twenty, please visit theUCLA Career Center website.

For in-person appointments,please bring a printout of your writing project to the appointment (preferred) or be prepared to show a version on your laptop.

For virtual appointments, You can upload your project document(s) when scheduling appointment in 12twenty. Alternatively, you can email them to gwc@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu immediately before your appointment, including the appointment date and time in the subject line. You can also share a Google Docs link in the meeting chat. Please note that 12twenty does not support file attachments in chat.

If you need to cancel your appointment, you must do so in the 12twenty system the day before in order to avoid a late cancellation penalty.

What Happens at a Writing Consultation Appointment?

You will have a 50 minute one-on-one appointment to discuss your writing with the graduate writing consultant at your appointment. The writing consultant will ask you questions about your writing goals and concerns and work with you collaboratively to improve your writing. The writing consultant does not review writing before the appointment, so expect about 5 pages double-spaced to be addressed in one session. If you have a longer text, be prepared to indicate which sections to focus on during your appointment. Come prepared to work actively on your writing and take notes.
